Questions you might have before signing up with Towerwave Communications VoIP Services

     1. What equipment is needed to place VoIP calls?
     2. How does local and long distance calling work with VoIP providers?
     3. Does the person I call have to have VoIP service as well?
     4. If I have an adapter, can it travel with me?
     5. Can I use the computer while making a VoIP call?
     6. Does my computer have to be turned on in order for me to use VoIP?
     7. How do I know when a VoIP call is coming in?

1. What equipment is needed to place VoIP calls?

A broadband Internet connection is a requirement for any VoIP service. This can be either wireless, cable or DSL. Dial up service is not compatible with any VoIP provider or service. If you wish to have an experience akin to the traditional phone experience, it is necessary to have an adapter for your phone. If you are content to use your computer, you will need a microphone to speak into and computer speakers so that you can hear the other person.

2. How does local and long distance calling work with VoIP providers?

There is a range of ways that calling works, depending upon your VoIP provider. Some providers will only allow you to call other subscribers (this can be very limiting). However, Towerwave Communications billing is similar to more traditional phone companies: one flat rate for local calls and then a minute rate for long distance calls.

3. Does the person I call have to have VoIP service as well?

No, the other party does not have to use VoIP. Because the calls are transmitted to the local phone company via the Internet, and because the signals are changed from data to analog at the final destination, it is possible to call someone who does not use VoIP.

4. If I have an adapter, can it travel with me?

Usually, as long as you have access to high speed Internet, it is possible to use your VoIP solution virtually anywhere. The adapter can be taken with you and can work for most telephones.

5. Can I use the computer while making a VoIP call?

Yes. You can talk on the phone at the same time you are using the Internet.

6. Does my computer have to be turned on in order for me to use VoIP?

While your computer does not have to be on in order for you to use VoIP (provided you have a phone adapter), it is necessary for your high speed Internet connection to be activated. Most wireless, DSL or cable modems can be active while the computer is off, making it possible for your phone to be connected to the Internet, even if the computer is not.

7. How do I know when a VoIP call is coming in?

If you have an adapter, the phone will ring as normal. If you use the computer, then it is possible to program it so that it makes a noise to alert you.
